UCL: Galatasaray Battle Back For 2-2 Draw Against 10-Man Copenhagen

September 20, (THEWILL) – A dramatic UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday, saw Galatasaray recover from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw with 10-man Copenhagen.

The Danish side looked on course for victory after Goncalves doubled their lead following Elyounoussi’s first half volley. But a red card for Jelert on 73 minutes turned the game on its head. Copenhagen had executed their game plan perfectly up until that point. Despite heavy early pressure, Galatasaray trailed to Elyounoussi’s wonderful close range volley against the run of play.

The visitors held firm after the break before Goncalves doubled their advantage with a composed finish. The complexion changed drastically when Jelert was dismissed for a second bookable offence with just over 15 minutes remaining. Sensing an opportunity, Galatasaray laid siege to the Copenhagen goal.

The pressure finally told in the 86th minute as defender Boey pulled one back to set up a tense finale. Incredibly, just two minutes later, substitute Tete popped up at the back post to score a dramatic equaliser. Copenhagen had defended so valiantly for most of the match, but the 10 men finally wilted in the closing stages.

In the end, both teams secured their first point of the UCL group stage. Copenhagen will rue missing out on a famous win after executing their game plan so well for long periods. Galatasaray will be relieved to take something from a match they dominated for large spells. Next, Galatasaray take on Istanbul Basaksehir in the Super Lig, while in the Superliga, Copenhagen travel to Brondby.
