Tuchel’s Bayern Munich Scrape Past Union Berlin With Guerreiro Goal

January 25, (THEWILL) – Bayern Munich managed a narrow 1-0 victory over Union Berlin on Wednesday night to move within four points of Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen. The win will come as a relief to manager Thomas Tuchel, who is reportedly under pressure after a testing run of results.

On-loan Tottenham defender Eric Dier, made his Bayern debut as a half-time substitute, while England captain Harry Kane saw a goal chalked off by VAR for offside. However, it was Raphael Guerreiro who made the decisive breakthrough for the hosts, forcing the ball home from close range in the 46th minute after Kane’s shot had struck the post.

Earlier in the game, Bayern had dominated possession and chances but found Union goalkeeper Frederik Ronnow in inspired form as he made a string of fine saves. Kingsley Coman and Joshua Kimmich both went close for the hosts in the first half, while at the other end, Janik Haberer wasted a good opportunity for the visitors.

However, in an ill-tempered moment, Union Berlin coach Nenad Bjelica was sent to the stands after appearing to push Bayern winger Leroy Sane in the face – an offence likely to bring significant disciplinary action. Guerreiro’s goal finally broke Union’s stubborn resistance after the break, although Kevin Behrens later had strong appeals for a penalty waived away after going down under a challenge in the area.

The three points ease the pressure on Tuchel after the defeat last time out at home to Werder Bremen. However, Bayern were made to work hard for the victory by a determined Union Berlin side for whom Ronnow excelled between the sticks.
