January 11, (THEWILL) – Deon Lendore, a Trinidadian Olympic medalist, has died in an automobile accident at the age of 29.
Lendore was a member of Trinidad and Tobago’s 4x400m relay team that won bronze in London 2012, and he also raced in the 400m at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. In 2015, he won silver in the relay at the World Championships in Beijing.
A tribute in his honour from the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee read: “Words cannot adequately express our sadness at the devastating and untimely loss of three-time Olympian and World Championships bronze medallist Deon Lendore, who has been an inspiration and motivation to us all both on and off the track.
“Deon has flown the Trinidad and Tobago flag with pride, honour, patriotism and an indomitable will throughout his career while helping and inspiring many. We express our deepest and heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, teammates, coaches, Abilene Club, Community of Arima and all who he would have touched.
“It is a sad day for the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic and Commonwealth Sport Movement.”
On Monday, Lendore is said to have crashed in Texas, where he was training and also helping as an assistant coach. In 2014, he ran the 400m in 44.36 seconds, making him the 62nd fastest athlete in history over one lap.
