July 23, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur’s pre-season preparations took an unexpected turn as their friendly match against former English Premier League side, Leicester City, was called off at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.
The encounter was initially delayed by 40 minutes due to heavy rainfall, which rendered the pitch unplayable. Efforts by groundsmen from both sides proved abortive and a series of inspections later, the match was eventually cancelled, leaving Spurs still in pursuit of their first victory under manager Ange Postecoglou.
Leicester City, who are in the process of rebuilding under the guidance of Enzo Maresca after being relegated to the Championship last season, were also looking forward to testing their mettle against Spurs. The fixture was expected to feature a reunion with former Leicester star James Maddison, now a part of the Tottenham squad, and the presence of ex-Spurs midfielder, Harry Winks, in the Leicester lineup.
However, the teams had to accept the disappointing outcome due to the unfavourable weather conditions. The Rajamangala National Stadium’s open-air setting did not help matters. Both sets of players demonstrated their appreciation for the loyal supporters, who had gathered for the contest by undertaking a lap of honour before exiting the field.
While the cancellation hampers Tottenham’s progress in the Postecoglou era, the focus now shifts to their future pre-season fixtures as they aim to fine-tune their strategies ahead of the upcoming campaign.
