September 15, (THEWILL) – Torrential rainfall accompanied by strong winds has ended the biting heat that enveloped Kano for several days, bringing relief to the residents.
The rain which started around 8 p.m. on Thursday, lasted into the wee hours of Friday, prompting the residents to retire to bed early to enable them savour the resultant clement weather.
Before the rain,the temperature in the city had been fluctuating between 35 degrees and 40 degrees Celsius,but has now dropped to between 23 degrees and 30 degrees.
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had earlier predicted heavy rainfall which it said could lead to flooding in about 48 towns in 13 states, including Kano, beginning from September 13 through September 17.
Some of the residents of the ancient city interviewed expressed relief at the coming of the rain which they said had ended the scorching heat waves that had made them uncomfortable for many days.
“This rain could not have come at a better time, as I have been sweating profusely which made me very uncomfortable and distracted me from conducting my routine activities,” said Malam Sa’idu Abubakar.
Abubakar,a petty trader,said the cooling of the weather occasioned by the downpour had enabled him to sleep well in the previous night, hoping that the rain would continue to fall for many more days.
Another resident of the capital city,Adamu Shafi’u,also expressed joy at the resumption of the rainfall, saying that the downpour had brought some succour to himself and family.
“For many days,we have not been able to sleep well due to the biting heat we experienced,but this rain has cooled the temperature for us to now sleep normally and conduct our daily activities without sweating,”Shefi’u, a retired civil servant, added.
For Rahama Isa,a housewife, the rainfall had brought a big relief to her, saying that the cool temperature had calmed her and the children.
“The rainfall has enabled us to sleep well last night and this morning because of the cooling of the temperature.We have also been able to collect a lot of clean rain water which we are now using for some of our domestic activities,” Isa said.
