October 25, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United’s Italian midfielder, Sandro Tonali, is reportedly set to be handed a 10-month ban from football and will miss the remainder of the English Premier League season.
The 23-year-old has become embroiled in an illegal betting scandal, which has already resulted in Juventus’ Nicolo Fagiolo receiving a seven-month suspension. Tonali admitted last week to his involvement in the betting scandal, including wagering on matches involving his former club, AC Milan. This admission will lead to the soon-to-be-confirmed suspension.
The player’s legal team have been in discussions with Italian football authorities and Turin prosecutors over the punishment for the midfielder. An agreement has now been reached between all parties involved.
An announcement of the ban is imminent with Tonali facing a 10-month long suspension. This means he would be available again ahead of next season’s EPL campaign. It is believed he can still train with Newcastle but will also receive treatment for a betting addiction that his agent agrees the player is suffering from.
Tonali can still feature for Newcastle in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, which is set to be his final match before beginning the lengthy suspension.
