February 24, (THEWILL) – The Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the President on Community Engagement (South East), Barrister Chioma Nweze, has applauded the Senate for passing the Bill seeking the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC).

Reacting to the development in a statement on Friday, Barr. Nweze noted that the passage of the bill was timely and essential for the proper integration of the South Eastern enclaves in the political equation and scheme of things.

She said the legislation represents a landmark institutional development that would oil the wheels of development in the South East region.

This Bill essentially aims to establish a Commission for the South East region that will be charged with the responsibility, amongst others, to receive and manage funds allocated by the Federal Government for the construction, reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region and the need to tackle the ecological problems and any other related environmental or developmental challenges in the South-east states and for related matters.

“We are particularly happy by the action of the Senate under the leadership of Senator Godswill Akpabio and concomitant passage of the bill by the House of Representatives earlier on. Both chambers deserve praise for answering the call of humanity and history and rising to the occasion.

“It is also the desire and plea of South East people that the bill, when transmitted to Mr President, will receive quick assent to enable the Commission to activate the full benefits for the South Eastern people,” the statement read in part.

Speaking further, the Presidential aide said the “South East is a melting pot of Commerce and with the birth of this bill, accelerated economic development is also guaranteed.

“The journey to the passage of this bill has been a very long but fruitful one. The roles played by all stakeholders on the road to the passage of the bill will also be remembered too.”
