September 19, (THEWILL) – The PGA of America has announced that LIV Golf players are now eligible to compete in both the PGA Championship and US Ryder Cup teams. This decision, revealed on Thursday, marks a significant shift in the professional golf landscape.
The announcement clarifies the status of LIV Golf players, which had been uncertain since the emergence of the rival tour. Brooks Koepka, who played in last year’s US Ryder Cup team, was able to do so due to a grace period that allowed him to remain a PGA of America member through 2024.
“All LIV Golf players are eligible for the PGA Championship and any American player, who qualifies for the Ryder Cup on points or is added to the US team as a captain’s pick is eligible to compete,” stated the PGA of America. This policy is consistent with LIV Golf players’ participation in the PGA Championship over the past two years.
The decision opens up opportunities for LIV golfers like Bryson DeChambeau, the reigning US Open champion. DeChambeau currently ranks third on the US points list for the 2025 Ryder Cup, despite being ineligible for PGA Tour events where most points are typically earned.
This move by the PGA of America could have far-reaching implications for professional golf, potentially easing tensions between the traditional tours and LIV Golf. It remains to be seen how this decision will impact player choices and the competitive landscape in the coming years.
