BEVERLY HILLS, March 25, (THEWILL) – The English Premier League, on Thursday, announced the start and end dates for the 2021/22 campaign after the dates were agreed upon by all shareholders involved.
While the next season will kickoff on Saturday, August 14, 2021, the final round of matches will take place on Sunday, 22 May, 2022. As usual of the EPL tradition, all matches of the last day will be played simultaneously on all grounds.
The EPL also took cognisance of plans by the United Kingdom’s government to exit lockdown and as such holds that these opening fixtures of the 2021/2022 campaign will be played in front of full stadia with in-person spectators.
THEWILL recalls that the current 2020/2022 season was pushed back because the coronavirus pandemic caused global lockdowns that resulted in the complete and total cessation of all sporting activities over most of the year, which made the previous term, that resumed late, overrun its initial schedule.
Another consequence was the postponement of the European Championship, which was originally scheduled for last summer. It has been rescheduled to now begin at the end of this season. The plan, when this year’s event is done, is to return to the traditional mid-August commencement and make it normal again.
