Tension, Suspense Rock PDP Screening Over Alleged Waiver For Ighodalo

January 30, (THEWILL) – Tension and suspense have enveloped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), screening exercise at its headquarters in Abuja, over a waiver granted by the National Working Committee (NWC), to Asue Ighodalo, one of the party’s governorship aspirants for the 2024 gubernitorial election in Edo State.

THEWILL gathered that the waiver came after aspirants under the platform of the party, forced  Ighodalo, a candidate allegedly sponsored by Governor Godwin Obaseki, out for being allegedly rude to Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, who is also an aspirant for the party’s governorship ticket.

Trouble was said to have started on Tuesday morning, when all PDP governorship aspirants, gathered in the waiting room, ahead of the screening at the party’s headquarters, in Wadata Plaza.

While all the aspirants were waiting, Ighodalo allegedly made derogatory remarks about the Deputy Governor. In solidarity with Shaibu, other aspirants agreed that Ighodalo left the waiting room.

A source at the screening exercise told THEWILL that the solidarity action did not go well with Ighodalo, who reportedly stormed out of the waiting room.

Meanwhile, the aspirants and their supporters united in opposition to the party granting Ighodalo a waiver, have staged a protest at the party’s headquarters in Abuja.

According to the protesters, Ighodalo had never voted in Edo State and should not be allowed to run for election under the PDP banner.

The protest escalated, leading to the intervention of riot Policemen, who were called in to suppress the demonstration.
