Ten Hag Believes Man Utd Still Need Defensive Improvements Ahead Of Arsenal Tie

September 02, (THEWILL) – As Erik ten Hag considers whether to give Antony his debut against Arsenal on Sunday, the Dutch manager has praised the improvement Manchester United have made in their defensive play, after recording three straight victories.

Jadon Sancho’s goal at the King Power Stadium on Thursday, helped United continue their comeback, after a disastrous start to Ten Hag’s reign ahead of welcoming the Gunners to Old Trafford. The last time the Red Devils defeated Arsenal, Crystal Palace, and Norwich City in a row was in December 2021.

In addition to keeping consecutive clean sheets after defeating Southampton last week, Ten Hag’s team has also improved defensively. Yet, the Dutchman is aware that more can be done.

He said: “I have seen some good stuff, you are talking about that. I see structures are coming, we are constructing and that’s good to see. We have to do that and improve from game to game, and that means work on the training ground, on the video, and in the games.

“Collectively, I see the whole team is defending and that makes it more easy for our defenders, but I think what they do well is they cooperate, they do it together and they support each other. They have a good performance and that makes it hard for the opposition to create chances, I think that’s what we see at this moment.”

United completed agreements for Ajax winger, Antony and Newcastle United goalkeeper, Martin Dubravka, to round off a busy transfer window. However, Ten Hag is still unsure of whether Antony will make his debut against the Gunners.

“Today he did his first training, individually,” Ten Hag said. “Tomorrow we have a team session and Saturday we have a team session. So I will think about it, and we will take a decision.”
