September 07, (THEWILL) — Tanzania has been thrown into mourning following the death of the country’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday while undergoing treatment for a heart-related illness at a hospital in Zanzibar.
The announcement was made by Tanzania’s Vice-President, Deogratius Ndejembi, who disclosed that Ameir passed away at about 8:00 a.m. local time at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving medical care.
According to the Vice-President, the late First Gentleman had been battling a heart condition before his death.
He extended condolences to President Samia, members of the bereaved family, and the people of Tanzania, describing the loss as a painful moment for the nation.
Ameir was buried later on Monday at his family residence in Kizimkazi, a coastal village in Zanzibar, in line with Islamic burial rites observed on the semi-autonomous island.
The death has triggered an outpouring of sympathy from leaders across Africa.
Kenyan President William Ruto said he received the news with “deep sorrow,” noting that President Samia had lost a lifelong companion, while Tanzania had lost a distinguished son whose quiet service and support for his family would be remembered.
Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema also conveyed condolences, assuring Tanzania that Zambia stands in solidarity with the First Family and the Tanzanian people during the difficult period.
Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye similarly expressed sympathy, praying for strength and comfort for President Samia and her family while asking God to grant eternal rest to Ameir’s soul.
Unlike many presidential spouses across Africa, Hafidh Ameir Hassan maintained a remarkably private life despite occupying one of Tanzania’s highest ceremonial positions.
An accomplished agricultural academic, he rarely appeared alongside President Samia at public engagements and generally stayed away from partisan politics and media attention.
He became Tanzania’s first-ever First Gentleman in March 2021 after Samia Suluhu Hassan was sworn in as President following the death of President John Magufuli.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, years before she began her political career. Together, they built a family of four children — three sons and one daughter.
