September 08, (THEWILL) – The Tanzanian national football team earned a valuable point on Thursday night, drawing 0-0 with Algeria, to secure qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time since 2019.
Facing the added pressure of passionate Algerian home fans at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, Tanzania produced a determined performance to hold the Desert Foxes, who had already confirmed their own spot in next year’s finals as Group F winners. The draw was enough for Tanzania to guarantee their return to AFCON in Ivory Coast next summer. It will be Tanzania’s third ever appearance at the prestigious continental competition.
Algeria controlled possession for large periods but struggled to break down a resilient Tanzanian defense. Mzamiru Yassini went closest for Tanzania in the first half, forcing a good save from Algeria’s goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea.
After the break, Algeria increased the pressure as they searched for a winner, but a combination of wayward finishing and brave Tanzanian defending kept them at bay. Himad Abdelli missed a free header in the 65th minute in Algeria’s best opportunity. In the closing stages, Algeria brought on attacking stars like Riyad Mahrez but Tanzania stood firm to earn a famous point.
The result means Tanzania finish second in Group F behind Algeria, while Uganda’s win over Niger was not enough for them to overtake the Taifa Stars. Tanzania’s manager and players were visibly overjoyed at the final whistle, having shown defensive steel and determination to achieve their target. The team can now look forward to making their mark at next year’s AFCON tournament.
