November 18, (THEWIILL) – The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has urged States and Local Governments to explore the platform of building cinema houses for growing sustainable films and tourism industries across Nigeria.

He stated this on Wednesday, at the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) global conference on linking tourism, culture and the creative industries titled: ‘A Day With Nollywood’, held at Civic Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.

According to Mohammed, the state governments across the country should establish at least one cinema in each local government area to enhance the development of the movie industry at all levels.

“It’s customary to put every blame on the doorsteps of the Federal Government but we don’t have a unitary system of government. We have a Federal System where States and Local Governments also partake in the revenue the government makes. The Federal Government has revenue of 52 percent of all the revenues made today in Nigeria.”

“What I’m saying is that why is it impossible for Local Governments to have at least one community cinema house? If every local government has one, we will have 774 cinema houses in Nigeria,”

“The federal government has created an enabling environment, which will make the film industry thrive. We have contributed a lot in repositioning the industry but our contributions are intangible”, he said.

He described the Asaba Film City developed by the Delta State Government as one of such commendable efforts toward the development of the creative industry.

The three days conference, which began on Monday, at the refurbished National Theatre Complex in Lagos, created an ambience for the filmmakers to identify notable linkages affecting the marriage between Nollywood, tourism, and culture.
