Xenophobic Attacks

The Nigerian National Assembly has hit back at South Africa over recurring xenophobic attacks against Nigerians and other African nationals, suspending all official visits to the country and ordering a boycott of legislative activities hosted or organised by South African authorities.

The incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, 2026, in the Umbilo area of Durban, where foreign nationals have been camping outside the Department of Home Affairs office on Che Guevara Road.

Shettima issued the warning on Monday in Luanda, Angola, during an interview with newsmen shortly before his departure for Nigeria.

Nigeria has formally brought the recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other nationals in South Africa before the African Union, urging continental leaders to take decisive steps to protect Africans and strengthen peaceful coexistence across national borders.
