There was a time when standing on the tee of a par four, one of the longer holes on a golf course, automatically meant reaching for my driver.

For those unfamiliar with the game, a standard round consists of two halves of nine holes. Completing the ninth is known as reaching the turn, the halfway point when you have enough evidence to form an opinion about how you are doing but still have half the contest ahead.

There is an intriguing idea in investing known as the margin of safety. The principle is most closely associated with Benjamin Graham, the legendary investor and teacher of Warren Buffett. At its simplest, it means leaving enough room in a decision for the possibility that your assumptions may be wrong. You do not build a strategy that succeeds only if everything unfolds exactly as expected.
