June 04, (THEWILL) – Iga Swatek defeated Coco Gauff 6-1 6-3 to win the French Open for the second time in her career.
Gauff was playing in her maiden Grand Slam singles final, and she was up against Iga Swiatek, who had won her previous five events in a row and had a 34-match winning streak.
Swiatek got out to a flying start, with Gauff failing to stifle the Pole’s early momentum. With two faults at 0-30, the American appeared worried right away. Swiatek took the first point with a brilliant backhand, bringing the score back to 15-30. With her first ace of the match, the world number one took the second point and then went on to win the game with her following serve and easily take the first set.
Gauff rallied back in the second set, breaking in the second game to take a 2-0 lead, but it did not last long. At 15-30, Gauff double-faulted, handing Swiatek two break points, and the world No. 1 needed just one to tie the game.
To finish off a stunningly spectacular showing, the 21-year-old Pole ripped off six of the final seven games in style.
