August 19, (THEWILL) – Sweden won bronze at the Women’s World Cup on Saturday, with a 2-0 victory over co-hosts, Australia, in Brisbane.
A first-half penalty by Fridolina Rolfo gave Sweden an early lead before Kosovare Asllani rifled in a long-range shot in the second half to seal the win. The Swedes started strong and were rewarded with a penalty in the 30th minute when Stina Blackstenius was fouled in the box after hitting the crossbar. Rolfo coolly converted from the spot to put Sweden up 1-0.
Australia keeper, Mackenzie Arnold, made a crucial save on Filipa Angeldahl right before half-time to keep her side in the game. Sweden struck again just after the hour mark on a textbook counterattack. Asllani drove through the midfield and exchanged passes with Blackstenius before firing a low shot into the bottom corner.
The goal put the match out of reach for an Australia side that looked fatigued after seven grueling games. The Matildas struggled to create many clear chances as the match wore on. Star striker Sam Kerr had difficulty finding space and had to be checked for injury after a hard challenge late in the game.
Sweden comfortably closed out the win to claim their fourth bronze in World Cup history. Despite the loss, Australia’s campaign was still a success. They made history on home soil but just ran out of steam against a Swedish team rich in experience. The Matildas have cemented their legacy and appear poised for even better things ahead.
