SAN FRANCISCO, October 29, (THEWILL) – The Supreme Court has upheld the election of Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the April 11 2015 Governorship election.
Thursday’s apex court ruling followed the appeal of the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, who challenged the victory of the governor.
Ihedioha had appealed the ruling of the Court of Appeal which upheld the victory of Okorocha as declared by INEC.
But Ihedioha had challenged the ruling on several grounds including alleged irregularities in the election and the non-usage of electronic card readers for voting.
“If INEC guideline says take materials by helicopter to the polling unit and the materials eventually got to the polling unit by boat, this cannot nullify the elections.
“Therefore, the use of card reader is merely a guideline alien to the electoral act, and cannot constitute the basis to invalidate an election,” the apex court justices ruled.
