January 12, (THEWILL) – The Supreme Court, on Friday, upheld the victory of Bassey Otu as governor of Cross River State in the 2023 gubernatorial election.
The apex court affirmed the judgement of the Court of Appeal and their State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which affirmed Otu as the winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Cross River State.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Sandy Onor, had challenged the membership of Otu in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The Court of Appeal, Calabar Judicial Division, had dismissed the appeal filed by Onor and the PDP against Otu as the governor of Cross River State.
Onor had approached both the tribunal and the appellate court, seeking to disqualify You from the 2023 governorship election over alleged dual citizenship, certificate forgery, and non-membership of the APC as of the time of the election.
While the lower courts dismissed the PDP petitions, the appellant had approached the Supreme Court to further seek the disqualification of Otu.
Ruling on Friday on his appeal, the apex court in its lead judgment delivered by Justice Helen Ogunwumiju, dismissed the appeal describing it as lacking merit.
