August 14, (THEWILL) – In the second Group C encounter of the ongoing FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica, Nigeria and South Korea will square off as the Super Falconets attempt to continue their impressive start to the tournament.
Both countries won their opening matches with South Korea beating Canada 2-0 while the Nigeria girls shocked European champions France 1-0. The Super Falconets, were resilient throughout the tie and were able to seize opportunities that came their way.
When it appeared that the game would end in a goalless draw, star striker Flourish Sabastine, burst through on goal and finished beautifully past the French goalkeeper, giving the Nigerians three crucial points. But, South Korea’s victory over Canada, who finished second in 2002, was just as stunning. The Taegeuk Ladies only needed two goals in nine second-half minutes to defeat the North Americans.
However, when the Asians play against the dominant power in African football, it will be a very different game. A victory for any of the two countries will ensure a spot in the quarterfinals, a round the Falconets have reached in just one of their eleven World Cup appearances.
Nigeria has a spotless winning record against their opponents on Sunday, defeating them 2-1 in Canada eight years ago and 2-0 in Japan in 2012. Alajuela’s Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto will host the game on Sunday. Kick-off time: is 9:00 PM local time.
