August 25, (THEWILL) – Chelsea picked up their first win of the English Premier League season under new manager, Mauricio Pochettino, defeating Luton Town 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Friday night.
Winger Raheem Sterling was the star of the show, scoring two and assisting another in an impressive display. The victory was Chelsea’s first in competitive football under Pochettino, who took over this summer. It was only Chelsea’s fifth league win this calendar year, after previously defeating Crystal Palace, Leeds United, Leicester City and Bournemouth.
Sterling opened the scoring for Chelsea after dribbling through the Luton defence and slotting home with his left foot. He is one of Chelsea’s most experienced players and has started the season leading by example.
Chelsea controlled most of the match but only secured the points late on. Luton had a brief threatening moment but saw their best chance deflected wide. Sterling added a second goal before assisting 18-year-old Nicolas Jackson to score his first Chelsea goal and wrap up a comfortable win. It was a much-needed confidence boost for Pochettino’s side.
They will seek to carry this into the EFL Cup on Wednesday when they play Wimbledon at Stamford Bridge. Before that, on Tuesday, Luton host Gilligham where, away from the EPL, they will be hoping to get a win under their belt.
