Starting A Business In Nigeria? Know Where To Register And Belong

For someone starting a business in Nigeria, the relevant organisations depend on what the business sells, where it operates and whom it employs.

  • CAC registration, tax registration and sector approvals serve different purposes.

  • SMEDAN connects small businesses to support programmes, subject to eligibility.

  • Manufacturers, exporters and regulated businesses have additional registration requirements.

  • Business associations and enterprise platforms offer support but do not replace licences.

October 28, (THEWILL) – A CAC certificate, a SMEDAN number and membership of a business association do three different jobs.

One establishes your registered business, another connects it to small-business support, and the third can provide industry representation and commercial contacts.

Knowing which you need can save you from paying for memberships while overlooking a compulsory registration.

For someone starting a business in Nigeria, the relevant organisations depend on what the business sells, where it operates and whom it employs.

These are the principal bodies and platforms to understand:

1. CAC For Registering Businesses

CACThe Corporate Affairs Commission handles business registration and incorporation. This is where you establish the registered name and structure under which the business will operate.

A business name and a limited liability company are different structures, so choose the one suited to your ownership and activities.

CAC allows proprietors to register business names directly without using a lawyer, accountant or chartered secretary.

Registration also brings ongoing filing requirements. Obtaining the certificate is not the end of your dealings with CAC.

Start with CAC.

2. NRS And Relevant State Revenue Service For Taxes

The Nigeria Revenue Service and state revenue authorities handle different tax responsibilities.

A company needs to establish its federal tax obligations, while a sole proprietor’s personal income tax and employees’ PAYE generally involve the relevant state authority.

Confirm your Tax ID, the returns required and the authority responsible for each obligation. Do not assume CAC registration completes every tax step, or that qualifying for an exemption removes every filing responsibility.

Nigeria’s new tax framework took effect in January 2026, making older startup tax guides particularly important to recheck.

Check NRS and your state’s official revenue-service website.

3. SMEDAN For Small-Business Support

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria provides entrepreneurship training, capacity building, access-to-finance initiatives and advocacy.

Its registration portal gives businesses a route into its support ecosystem. Individual programmes may still require separate applications, documents and selection.

A SMEDAN registration does not replace CAC registration, and it should not be interpreted as a guaranteed grant or loan approval.

Register through SMEDAN’s official portal.

4. Your Sector Regulator For Permission To Operate

The organisation you need depends on the business.

NAFDAC is relevant to regulated products such as food, drugs and cosmetics. Its processes can include product documentation, facility inspection and laboratory testing.

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria administers conformity programmes, including MANCAP for locally manufactured products and SONCAP for regulated imports. Establish which requirements apply to your particular product.

For payment businesses, the Central Bank of Nigeria maintains separate authorisation categories. A business that accepts online payments is not automatically the same as a business providing regulated payment services.

These are examples, not an exhaustive list of regulators. Your exact activity determines the approvals required.

5. NEPC For Businesses Entering Non-Oil Exports

The Nigerian Export Promotion Council provides exporter registration through its online platform.

Beyond the exporter’s certificate, NEPC offers export training, trade linkages and information about export incentives.

This makes it relevant to a producer looking for overseas buyers as well as a business already preparing shipments.

Exporter registration does not replace product-specific approvals, customs documentation or the importing country’s requirements.

Use NEPC’s registration guidance.

6. Startup Nigeria For Eligible Technology Startups

The Startup Support and Engagement Portal provides the application route for Nigeria’s startup label.

The label is designed for qualifying digital-technology ventures. Requirements include incorporation, company-age limits, innovation criteria and Nigerian founder ownership.

This is not a compulsory certificate for every newly established business. A fashion shop, consultancy or trading business does not automatically qualify simply because it has just opened.

Applicants must provide the prescribed company documents and information about their products.

Check Startup Nigeria’s requirements.

7. NDPC For Applicable Data-Protection Registration

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission oversees personal data protection.

Businesses should assess their responsibilities when collecting or using customer, employee or other personal information. Certain businesses classified as data controllers or processors of major importance must register with the Commission.

This is particularly relevant when the business handles substantial or sensitive personal information. Do not assume that a small team, an online-only operation or a privacy-policy page settles the question.

Check the NDPC’s official guidance.

8. Employment Bodies Once You Begin Hiring

Hiring can bring registration and contribution requirements involving bodies such as PenCom and the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund.

PenCom oversees the contributory pension system. NSITF administers the Employees’ Compensation Scheme, which covers work-related injury and other qualifying circumstances.

These are employment responsibilities, not networking memberships. Establish which schemes apply when setting up payroll rather than waiting until an employee needs assistance or a compliance certificate is requested. Other employment-related obligations may also apply.

9. Chambers And Industry Associations For Business Connections

A chamber of commerce can help a business access commercial networks, events, training and representation. The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, for example, publishes membership categories with different benefits and subscriptions.

Manufacturing businesses can investigate the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, whose membership is voluntary and offers advocacy, industry information, advisory services and networking.

The Nigerian Association of Small Scale Industrialists is another organisation to examine for small industrial businesses.

Before paying, ask about membership eligibility, annual dues, the activity of the local branch and the specific services available to your business.

10. Enterprise Platforms For Training And Business Development

Organisations such as FATE Foundation offer enterprise-development programmes for aspiring and emerging entrepreneurs.

These can provide structured business training, mentoring and peer support. They are useful for founders who need help developing a business rather than another registration certificate.

Apply to the programme that fits your stage and needs. A training organisation may run several programmes with different entry requirements; joining a mailing list does not mean you have been admitted or selected for funding.

Explore FATE Foundation.

The sensible starting point is your business structure, tax obligations and activity-specific approvals. Add support platforms and associations where they offer a service you can use.

State and local requirements, including premises or signage approvals where applicable, also need to be checked for your operating location.
