SAN FRANCISCO, November 22, (THEWILL) – English Premier League club Tottenham moved top of the Premier League on Saturday after strikes from Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso earned them an emphatic 2-0 victory over Manchester City.

Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho commemorated a year in charge of Spurs with a second straight win over old rival Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard who was hoping to mark his new contract with a positive result has now lost all three of his games at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The hosts made a brilliant start when a lofted ball from Ndombele reached Son. The Korean beat the offside trap and switched from his right foot to send a cool finish with his left through the legs of an onrushing Ederson in the fifth minute.

Harry Kane followed Son’s example and had the ball in the net after a superb move involving the latter but he did not beat the offside trap the way Son did.

In the meanwhile, City controlled proceedings and continued to dominate possession while Ferran Torres, Rodri and Ruben Dias all forced routine saves from Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The visitors believed they had found an equaliser after 27 minutes when Laporte fired in. But, referee Mike Dean overturned the goal after a pitchside review found Gabriel Jesus handled Rodri’s cross before passing to the defender.

The game proceeded without a notable opportunity to show for City’s continued probe of their hosts. Then, a swift Spurs counter-attack saw Kane thread a pass through to Lo Celso. The Argentine substitute hit a fine left-footed finish beyond Ederson just 35 seconds after replacing Ndombele.

Guardiola introduced the England pair of Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling with 18 minutes remaining. Lloris contributed his bit again by saving from Dias late on as Spurs held on for a memorable victory by the same scoreline as they won this fixture in February.

Tottenham next host Ludogorets in the Europa League on Thursday while City will look to bounce back in Greece as they play Olympiacos in the Champions League on Wednesday.
