Spurs Escape FA Cup Upset With Late Goals Against Morecambe

January 09, (THEWILL) – Tottenham scored three goals in the final 16 minutes to avoid being knocked out of the FA Cup by Morecambe and avoid another ignominious Cup upset for an English Premier League side.

Following Newcastle’s humiliation in front of their Saudi Arabian owners the day before, Morecambe pledged to do the same to Spurs in North London. On 34 minutes, Anthony O’Connor volleyed Morecambe ahead after eluding his marker Japhet Tanganga at a corner.

Harry Winks fired a free-kick from wide on the left near the corner flag over the goalie and into the top corner 16 minutes from time to level the scores to Morecambe’s disappointment.

Lucas Moura then delivered the fatal punch on 86 minutes, pilfering the ball on the halfway line and stroding free before around the goalie and shooting home.

On 88 minutes, Harry Kane put the game out of reach.

It ensured Conte reached the FA Cup final in both of his previous FA Cup campaigns as head coach, and he will be hoping to do so again after escaping with his team today.

However, Spurs must first rescue an EFL Cup semi-final and prepare for a North London clash next weekend. Meanwhile, Morecambe will face AFC Wimbledon on Saturday in a rematch of their relegation struggle.
