December 27, (THEWILL) – Tottenham Hotspur has been dealt another injury setback this season, with manager Ange Postecoglou, confirming that centre-back Cristian Romero, will be sidelined for around a month due to a hamstring strain.
The Argentina international was substituted at half-time during Spurs’ 2-1 English Premier League victory, over Everton on Saturday, after feeling some muscle discomfort. Scans have since revealed a hamstring injury that will keep the 24-year-old out of action for the next four to five weeks.
This adds to Tottenham’s mounting injury issues, particularly in defence. They are already missing Dutch defender Micky van de Ven, while left-back Ben Davies has been filling in at centre-back. With Romero out, Eric Dier may be shifted inside, allowing summer signing Pedro Porro to come in at right-back.
There was more cautious news regarding Van de Ven’s return timeline. While the player himself recently claimed he would be back training within weeks, Postecoglou downplayed that suggestion. “I wouldn’t put too much stock in what the players say,” said the manager. It remains doubtful whether Van de Ven will feature before Tottenham’s clash against Manchester United next month.
Postecoglou will have to continue shuffling his depleted defence for the coming weeks, starting with the trip to Brighton and Hove Albion on Thursday. Winger Destiny Udogie returns from suspension for that game, but Spurs have a lengthy absentee list including James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur, Ivan Perisic and others.
