August 21, (THEWILL) – Spanish Football Federation President, Luis Rubiales, has faced criticism after kissing player Jenni Hermoso on the lips during the Women’s World Cup trophy presentation on Sunday.
Rubiales kissed Hermoso following Spain’s 1-0 victory over England in the final. Hermoso later said on social media that she “didn’t like” the kiss. The kiss sparked backlash on social media, with many calling it inappropriate and non-consensual. The hashtag “resign now” trended on Twitter in relation to Rubiales in Spain. Government minister Irene Montero described the kiss as a form of “sexual violence” that women face daily and should not be normalised.
In a later statement released by the Spanish Football Federation, Hermoso said the kiss was a “natural gesture of affection” resulting from the joy of winning the World Cup. Rubiales defended his actions, calling critics “idiots and stupid people.” However, many in Spain argued kissing someone without consent is unacceptable, regardless of the circumstances.
The controversy comes after months of turmoil surrounding Spain’s national team coach, Jorge Vilda. In September, 15 players said they would not play for Vilda without addressing concerns over their “emotional state.” Despite this player revolt, the Federation continued backing Vilda, who led Spain to victory.
Spain won their first-ever Women’s World Cup title by defeating England 1-0 on Sunday. The team overcame off-field drama to capture the trophy under Vilda’s leadership. However, Rubiales’ actions after the match have shifted focus away from the team’s historic accomplishment.
