August 29, (THEWILL) – Spain won the FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup 2022 trophy with a thrilling 3-1 victory over Japan on Sunday, at Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica.
The team, led by Pedro Lopez, defeated the same opponents by the same score to avenge their setback to Japan in the 2018 championship game. Spain’s victory in the U20 World Cup put a stop to Japan’s nine-match winning streak.
In the first 15 minutes of the game, Inma Gabarro scored the game’s first goal, giving Spain a 1-0 lead. Salma Paralluelo then scored two goals in as many minutes to give Spain a 3-0 lead after the first 30 minutes.
Suzu Amano’s goal in the 47th minute highlighted Japan’s tenacious effort as they rallied in the second half. But the Spanish defence expertly halted any further erosion of their advantage.
