November 03, (THEWILL) – Tottenham has disclosed that Son Heung-Min fractured his orbital bone in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Marseille, raising questions about his ability to play in the 2022 World Cup.
After colliding aerially with Marseille defender, Chancel Mbemba, in the 23rd minute, the forward fell down hurt, causing a lengthy break in play.
Son was assisted off the pitch by the Spurs medical personnel looking to be in obvious discomfort and having difficulty walking, as his team went on to advance to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League with goals from Clement Lenglet and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
On Wednesday, Spurs revealed that Son would need surgery due to an injury to his left eye. A club statement of the fracture read: “We can confirm that Son Heung-min will undergo surgery to stabilise a fracture around his left eye. Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course.”
This calls into question Son’s participation in the World Cup, which South Korea will begin in just 22 days against Uruguay. His injury is a major setback for Spurs since Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, two other forwards, are still out as they get ready to play Liverpool in the EPL on Sunday.
