BEVERLY HILLS, CA, January 27, (THEWILL) – A fresh Boko Haram attack has claimed the lives of a soldier and 51 others in Kawuri village in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State.
The gunmen, numbering about 50, were said to have stormed the village Sunday evening, setting ablaze over 300 residential houses.
Policemen and other civilians were not also spared in the attack which lasted over four hours as they were attacked and inflicted with varying degrees of injuries.
Many of the injured, including traders, who had come for the Sunday market, were taken to the Konduga General Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital for treatment.
The attack came on the heels of a similar one a week ago where over 100 persons were killed in the area.
United Nations reports that Boko Haram attacks in the state have forced over 6,000 into exile in neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon as 37 communities of Kwaljiri, Kaya, Ngawo Fate, Limanti, Njaba, Yahuri, Mude, Wala and Alau among others in Damboa, Konduga and Gwoza Council areas have all been sacked by Boko Haram terrorists.
The Borno State governor, Alhaji Kashim Shettima, was advised against visiting the area on Monday by the military who were flushing the insurgents out of the village.
“The governor’s visit to Kawuri has been cancelled because the military has advised against it as they are still conducting an operation in the area,” a protocol officer at the Government House disclosed.
This is as Bulama Kuliri, a resident of the village, said “I believe more than 50 people have been killed in the attack because the whole village has been razed by the Boko Haram and there were still loud explosions from different directions as I left with bodies littering the village.”
However, military and police officers were meeting with the state governor over the attack when filing this report.
