January 28, (THEWILL) – Italy’s Jannik Sinner produced an astonishing fightback from two sets down to defeat Daniil Medvedev and clinch his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open. The 22-year-old fourth seed battled back after losing the opening two sets to eventually prevail 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 against the world number two.
Despite playing in his maiden Grand Slam final, Sinner showed incredible mental resilience after being outplayed in the early exchanges. Medvedev was aggressive and dominant, racing through the first two sets as his Italian opponent struggled to find any rhythm. However, Sinner regained his composure and gradually wrested back control, winning three gruelling sets to seal a memorable victory.
The defeat was agonising for Medvedev, who also surrendered a two-set lead against Rafael Nadal in the 2019 Australian Open final. The Russian became the first man to lose multiple Grand Slam finals after leading by two sets since Pete Sampras in the 1990s. Medvedev had also previously come from two sets down multiple times earlier in the tournament.
By digging deep to overcome his early jitters, Sinner displayed astonishing maturity and nerves of steel to become the youngest Australian Open men’s champion since Novak Djokovic in 2011. His victory makes him the first Italian man to lift a Grand Slam singles title since Adriano Panatta at Roland Garros in 1976.
The enthralling five-set affair was filled with dramatic twists and turns. Ultimately, it was Sinner who found extra gear when it mattered most, showcasing his lethality and determination to fight fire with fire. After having his back against the wall, the fast-rising Italian star leaves Melbourne with the trophy in an unforgettable final.
