June 12, (THEWILL) – Valentina Shevchenko won a split decision over Taila Santos in the co-main event of UFC 275 in Kallang, Singapore, demonstrating her supremacy once more.
The champion had a rare moment of weakness in the first round. Santos took advantage of the champion’s error and took her back from the clinch in transition. Santos had a body triangle and tried to lock in a rear-naked choke after a neck crank, but she failed.
In the second round, the 28-year-title old’s bid became much more real. She was able to take the bout to the ground once more and maintain top position. Despite the champ’s gogoplata effort, she controlled the majority of the round.
In the fourth round, Santos faced some unfortunate difficulties. The two competitors butted heads as Shevchenko began a combination, and Santos’ eye swelled shut as a result. Both combatants had their moments in the fifth round. The competitive round brought an inconclusive conclusion to a difficult bout to score.
Throughout her tenure as the flyweight champion, it has been established that Shevchenko is the best fighter in the division. With her victory over Santos, she has now successfully defended her title seven times in a row defeating Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Katlyn Chookagian, and Jessica Andrade on the way.
