SAN FRANCISCO, July 02, (THEWILL) – The Senate on Wednesday approved a former Kano State Governor, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau, Dr. Abdu Bulama (Yobe State), Dr. Stephen Orise Oru (Delta State) and Prince Adedayo Adeyeye (Ekiti State) as Ministers of the federal republic.

The nominees were cleared after they presented themselves for screening at the Senate chamber.

President Goodluck Jonathan had about two weeks ago sent a letter to the Senate asking that the nominees be approved as members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC).

At the screening, the nominees were drilled on a wide range of issues by senators present before they unanimously gave their approval.

THEWILL recalls that Shekarau, who is the most popular of the nominees, defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the PDP in April. He is tipped to be named Education Minister.
Pundits say President Goodluck Jonathan intends to use Shekarau, who was a former Presidential aspirant in the 2011 general elections, to checkmate the ever rising influence of Kano State governor, Mr. Rabiu Kwankwaso of the APC.
While answering a question on the issue of unemployment in Nigeria, Shekarau said skills acquisition for Nigerian students at the first three years of secondary education as envisioned in the 6-3-3-4 curriculum should be revisited by government and effectively implemented.

According to him, the skills acquisition component of the 6-3-3-4 education curriculum which started in 1976 with the implementation of the Universal Primary Education (UPE) and followed up with importation of Introductory Technology tools from 1979- 1982, for skills acquisition by junior secondary pupils, would have to a very large extent, assisted the country in the churning out self reliant and self employed school leavers on yearly basis if the Programme had been implemented as envisioned.

“Part of the way out for our dear country on the problem of unemployment which breeds indiscipline, unrest etc in the country is for us to go back to the curriculum by making it practically serve as catalyst for addressing the issue of unemployment of school leavers right from the classrooms,” he explained.

He also suggested fixing the nation’s ailing power sector as a critical component in solving the problem of unemployment.
While congratulating the nominees on their successful screening, Senate President David Mark, who presided at the Wednesday’s session, advised the quartet to see Nigeria as their constituency. He also urged them to rise above partisan politics and contribute their quota to the development of the nation.

“I congratulate all the nominees who are much grounded in their various fields. Irrespective of where they are deployed to or the portfolio they are given in the federal executive council, I hope they will contribute their best to the development of Nigeria,” Mark said.
