December 08, (THEWILL) – The establishment of a National Sports Commission (NSC) and approval for the founding of a Federal University of Sports, Nkalagu in Ebonyi State have both been passed by the Nigerian Senate in two bills.
Following the deliberation of two independent reports by the Committee on Sports and Youth Development, both proposals were passed during Tuesday’s plenary.
Senator Obinna Ogba, the Committee’s Chairman, stated in his presentation that the National Sports Commission, once constituted, would be responsible for managing, encouraging, and growing sports and games across Nigeria.
Stakeholders in the public hearing praised the bill’s legislative aim, noting that the Commission will have a significant impact on Nigerian youngsters who desire to be successful athletes.
Ogba explained that the establishment of the Sports Commission will be economically beneficial especially as Nigeria renews efforts to diversify its revenue sources as it has the ability to aid in that process for maximum revenue generation.
In a separate presentation, the Senator stated that, once established, the Federal University of Sports, Nkalagu, would develop and offer academic and professional programmes leading to the award of first degrees, post-graduate research and higher degrees.
This will place more emphasis on planning, adaptive, technical, maintenance, developmental, and productive skills in the engineering, scientific, and allied professional disciplines relating to sports resources.
