SAN FRANCISCO, November 01, (THEWILL) – A majority of senators on Tuesday rejected a consideration of the non-career ambassadorial nominees which President Muhammadu Buhari sent last week to the Upper Chamber for confirmation.
Howver, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, vetoed his colleagues’ vote against a consideration of the 46 non-career ambassadorial nominees.
When Saraki put the confirmation of the nominees to a voice vote during the day’s plenary, the sound of “nays” reverberated more than the “ayes” but the Senate President ruled that the “ayes” had it.
At first, when more senators shouted “nay”, he said: “Please colleagues let’s be serious. I will put it to vote again.”
Saraki went ahead to call for votes a second time, but the “nays” were louder, but he ruled: “the ayes have it.”
This happened few minutes after the lawmakers rejected the President’s request for legislative approval for his $30bn external borrowing plan.
