September 14, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have confirmed that winger Jadon Sancho will train separately from the first-team squad until a disciplinary issue is resolved.
The decision comes after Sancho was left out of the matchday squad for the 3-1 defeat at Arsenal on September 3, with manager Erik ten Hag citing poor training performances as the reason. Sancho responded to the snub by posting a tweet later that night, claiming that he had been made a scapegoat for a long time and that ten Hag’s comments were completely untrue.
The tweet has since been deleted, but it has reportedly angered the United hierarchy, who are backing ten Hag’s stance on the matter. The manager has developed a reputation as a disciplinarian since taking over at Old Trafford, having terminated the contract of Cristiano Ronaldo in 2022 and stripped Harry Maguire of the captaincy this summer.
THEWILL recalls that Sancho joined United from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in July 2021, but has struggled to live up to his price tag. He has scored only 12 goals in 82 appearances for the club and has not played for England since 2021. He has also faced competition for his place from academy prospects Hannibal Mejbri and Daniel Gore, who were preferred to him on the bench against Arsenal.
It is unclear when Sancho will return to the first-team fold, but he is expected to miss the home game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday. United are currently 11th in the English Premier League table, six points behind leaders Manchester City after four games.
