Sanchez Leaves Qatar Head Coach Position After Disappointing World Cup

December 30, (THEWILL) – Felix Sanchez has decided to leave his position as head coach of the Qatar national team, following their underwhelming performance at the World Cup. The hosts of the tournament had high hopes for their squad, but unfortunately, they were unable to earn a single point in front of their home fans.

Sanchez, a former youth coach at Barcelona, had had a long and successful career in Qatari football, starting as an academy coach in 2006, before eventually being appointed head coach of the national team in 2017. During his tenure, he led the team to an Asian Cup triumph in 2019, which is widely considered to be the highlight of his time with the team.

According to the Qatar Football Association (QFA), Sanchez’s departure was “mutually decided”, as his contract was set to expire on Saturday. In a statement, QFA President, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani praised Sanchez for his contributions to Qatari football, stating that “the football family of Qatar will always be grateful for the success he has brought to Qatari football over the years.”

Sanchez himself expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to coach the national team, saying that “the past five years with Qatar’s senior national team have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” He added that he will always hold a special place in his heart for Qatar, its people, and its football, but now feels that it is time to move on and explore new challenges.

Qatar’s World Cup campaign was statistically the worst of any host nation in the tournament’s history. They lost all three of their group stage matches, conceding a total of seven goals, both records for a home team.
