February 26, (THEWILL) – Salernitana’s new coach, Paulo Sousa, had a successful matchday as his team triumphed over Monza with a 3-0 victory.
The win was all the more impressive considering Salernitana had lost Sousa’s debut match 2-0 to Lazio. Monza had their first defeat of the year against Milan before this match and was without Marlon, Samuele Birindelli, and Nicolò Rovella due to suspension. Meanwhile, Salernitana’s Boulaye Dia was not fully fit.
There was cause for concern when the match was halted for 10 minutes when the Monza goalkeeper Alessio Cragno, who was making his Serie A debut, accidentally clattered into several players while trying to punch a free-kick clear.
Salernitana took the lead with a stunning goal from Lassana Coulibaly. Antonio Candreva laid off the ball for Coulibaly just inside the area to curl the ball into the far top corner. Grigoris Kastanos and Candreva himself, who was captain of the hosts, followed up with two more goals in quick succession, making it a 3-0 victory.
The win was a much-needed boost for Salernitana, who had gone three rounds without scoring and had not won a home game since October. On Saturday, Monza will host Empoli while Salernitana are away at Sampdoria the next day.
