February 22, (THEWILL) – In an intense encounter, The Gambia secured a 1-0 victory over Tunisia in the TotalEnergies 2023 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations Group C clash on Tuesday.
The win, which temporarily sent the Young Scorpions to the top of the Group, was a repeat of the third-place match in 2021, which saw the Young Scorpions emerge victorious on penalties in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
In the Tuesday match, Abdoulie Bojang’s Young Scorpions dominated possession against the Young Carthage Eagles, with Mahmud Bajo, Haruna Rasid Njie, and Alieu Gibba, dictating the flow of the contest. However, the first half saw neither side able to register a shot on goal.
In the second half, both sides made changes to try and effect the match, but it was The Gambia, who had the best opportunity after 70 minutes through Rasid Njie. The breakthrough finally came six minutes from regular time when Alagie Saine headed in Sanyang’s delivery off the post to secure The Gambia all three points.
The West Africans are appearing at their fourth U-20 AFCON tournament, having won bronze twice in their three previous participations in the tournament. The win puts them in a strong position to progress to the next round of the competition.
