October 20, (THEWILL) – In the waning moments of Wednesday’s 2-0 triumph over Tottenham, Cristiano Ronaldo, an unused substitute, made his way down the Old Trafford tunnel before the final whistle.
With goals from Fred and Bruno Fernandes sealing a victory that could have been much more humiliating for Spurs, had it not been for a brilliant effort from Hugo Lloris, United put up unquestionably the best performance of the Erik ten Hag era so far.
At about the 89th minute, Ronaldo was seen leaving the field alone and did not finish the game with his teammates. He had been warming up two minutes earlier, but Ten Hag decided to introduce Anthony Elanga and Christian Eriksen instead. Soon after, a visibly irritated Ronaldo simply walked away.
When asked about Ronaldo’s leaving, Ten Hag responded: “I will deal with that tomorrow,”
Ten Hag had declined to introduce the Portugal international in the 6-3 thrashing at the hands of Manchester City out of what he called “respect” for Ronaldo’s career, so this was the second time in the past four Premier League games that Ronaldo had not been called upon from the bench.
