October 07, (THEWILL) – Rivers United Football Club has been motivated to defeat reigning CAF Champions League champions Wydad and advance to the group round by the government of the State.
Each player had been promised $40,000 for the victory according to Chris Green, the Athletic Director at the oil-rich Rivers State on Friday. In a CAF Champions League playoff first-leg matchup on Sunday in the southern city of Port Harcourt, defending Nigerian league champion Rivers United will host Wydad Casablanca from Morocco.
The Nigeria Professional Football League champions will progress to the competition’s group stage if they triumph over two legs and the players have already been rewarded with a $20,000 bonus from Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike for their team’s historic first-place finish in the Nigerian league in June.
Green informed the players that the governor had also declared that they would each receive $40,000 (41,000 euros) if they succeeded in the doubleheader and reached the CAF Champions League group stages.
