Richarlison, Brazil Football Call For Zero Tolerance For Racism After Banana Incident

September 28, (THEWILL) – After being the target of racial taunts while representing Brazil, Richarlison has encouraged football bodies to take appropriate action.

At the Parc des Princes in Paris, a banana was thrown at the Tottenham Hotspur forward as he rushed towards the corner flag to celebrate scoring his team’s second goal in a 5-1 victory over Tunisia. The banana was kicked away on camera by Manchester United midfielder Fred, as other items were also tossed into the field.

Following the event, the 25-year-old wrote on Twitter that more than just words of condemnation were needed. His Portuguese post was translated as: “As long as they stay ‘blah blah blah’ and don’t punish, it’s going to continue like this, happening every day and everywhere. No time bro!”

Five-time world champions, Brazil, posed for pictures with an anti-racism banner that read, “Without our black players, we wouldn’t have stars on our shirts,” prior to the game. After the incident on Tuesday night, the Brazilian Football Federation (CBF) released a statement that demanded severe penalties.

It read: “After Brazil’s second goal, a banana was thrown towards Richarlison. The CBF reinforces its stance against discrimination and vehemently repudiates yet another episode of racism in football. Whether on or off the field, attitudes like these cannot be tolerated.”
