July 15, (THEWILL) – West Ham United have confirmed the departure of Declan Rice, as the midfielder prepares to join Arsenal in a British record transfer deal worth £105 million.
In a heartfelt statement to West Ham supporters, Rice expressed the difficulty of leaving a club he has been a part of since the age of 14: “I want you to know how tough a decision it has been for me to leave an environment that I have loved and cherished so much.” He further emphasised his ambition to play at the highest level of the game, while expressing his deep gratitude and respect for West Ham. “This club and its supporters will always be in my heart, and forever a part of who I am.”
West Ham Chairman, David Sullivan, acknowledged the club’s desire to retain Rice but respected his wish for a new challenge. “We wanted to build our team around him, and made a series of improved, long-term contract offers to secure his future,” Sullivan said.
“However, once Declan made it clear that he wished to move on and seek a new challenge, the club felt it would not be right to stand in his way, acting in the best interests of West Ham United.” Sullivan conveyed his appreciation for Rice’s contributions and wished him well in his future endeavours.
The first meeting between West Ham and Arsenal is scheduled for December 26 at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium. This match will be a unique experience for Rice as he faces his former teammates for the first time in his career. The departure of Rice, who captained West Ham to victory in the Europa Conference League final in May, marks a significant transition for both clubs and adds excitement to the upcoming season.
