June 15, (THEWILL) – Akeem Omolade, a former professional Nigerian footballer, was discovered dead in Palermo, Italy, as announced by his previous club, FC Torino, on Monday.
Details of the circumstances leading to his demise are still sketchy, but the 39-year-old was discovered unresponsive in a Peugeot by emergency services. There were no evident exterior injuries at the time of the initial inspection, but his family revealed that the Kaduna-born player had complained of leg pains a few days before his death.
FC Toronto noted in their statement: “The President Urbano Cairo and the whole Torino football club share heartily in the pain of the Omolade family for the death of Akeem Omolade, a former football player from Granada.
“Arriving at Toro from Treviso, Omolade played first in the Primavera squad and later in the First Team, making his Serie A debut with the grenade on February 2, 2003, in the match against Inter.”
At the age of 17, Omolade relocated to Italy, where he began his professional career with Treviso in Serie B, and after just one season, he moved to Torino in Serie A. He played for 11 other clubs in the country, including Treviso, Novara, and Reggiana, before retiring in 2017.
