August 27, (THEWILL) – Ikenne-based club, Remo Stars, were eliminated from the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League on Sunday, despite a valiant late comeback effort against Ghanaian champions, Medeama SC.
The first leg in Ghana ended 1-0 to Medeama, putting Remo Stars in a difficult position for the second leg at home. They were able to equalise the aggregate score late in the game to send it to extra time locked at 1-1 over both legs. However, a potential winning goal for Remo Stars was controversially ruled out for offside. This sent the match to a penalty shootout after no more goals in extra time.
In the penalty shootout, Medeama SC showed their poise and confidence, winning 3-2 to advance to the next round. Although Remo Stars battled hard in their Champions League debut, they ultimately fell short against the more experienced Ghanaian club.
Unfortunately, Remo Stars now join fellow Nigerian club Enyimba FC in being knocked out of the CAF Champions League. Enyimba were eliminated by Al Ahly Benghazi after a goalless draw at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
The results mean no Nigerian clubs have advanced from the preliminary rounds of the CAF Champions League. Remo Stars gave a good account of themselves in their first appearance but will need to regroup and refocus for their next continental campaign.
