August 09, (THEWILL) – Chelsea have announced that right-back, Reece James, will take over as the new club captain, succeeding Cesar Azpilicueta, who departed Stamford Bridge this summer.
The 22-year-old defender is a product of the Chelsea Academy and has established himself as one of the top fullbacks in Europe over the past couple seasons. James was delighted with the prestigious honour, and admitted that he had “big shoes to fill” after the likes of John Terry and Azpilicueta, but was excited by the opportunity. The English international vowed to lead the team with his own style and approach.
New Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, endorsed the decision, stating James was chosen through mutual agreement between himself and the club hierarchy. Pochettino praised the youngster’s attitude and leadership qualities that were on display during pre-season.
Along with naming James as skipper, Chelsea also announced that vice-captain duties have been handed to left-back, Ben Chilwell. At just 22 and 24 years old respectively, the defensive duo represent a new young leadership core at Stamford Bridge.
Azpilicueta leaves an immense legacy after 11 trophy-laden seasons with the Blues, but in Reece James, Chelsea believe they have a future captain capable of continuing the high standards set by his predecessors.
