November 02, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid defeated Celtic 5-1 to take the top spot in Group F of the Champions League.
Prior to the last round of games, Madrid had a one-point advantage over RB Leipzig and only needed to match the Bundesliga team’s performance against Shakhtar Donetsk, to guarantee leadership in the group.
Celtic never seemed to be in a position to help the German club, as they gave up two penalties in the first 21 minutes, both of which were converted by Luka Modric and Rodrygo from 12 yards, as Leipzig defeated Shakhtar 4-0.
Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior, and Federico Valverde, gave Carlo Ancelotti’s team a deservedly overwhelming showing on the scoreboard, while Jota had the ultimate say with a wonderful free-kick for the visitors. Josip Juranovic missed a first-half penalty kick at the other end, in a game of three spotkicks.
Dundee United awaits Celtic in their return to the Scottish Premiership on Saturday as their short stay in Europe comes to a quiet end while Real are next in action on Monday at Rayo Vallecano.
