February 05, (THEWILL) – Mallorca successfully secured a fourth consecutive 1-0 home win by defeating Real Madrid on Sunday.
The only goal of the game came from an own goal by visiting captain Nacho Fernandez. Mallorca defended their lead well, limiting Real Madrid to long-range efforts with no shots on target in the first half. Also, Mallorca’s goalkeeper, Predrag Rajkovic, saved a second-half penalty from Marco Asensio, preventing Los Blancos from drawing level.
Real Madrid began the game groggily and despite making several substitutions, including the introduction of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, they were unable to break down Mallorca’s compact defence.
The match ended with Mallorca securing a crucial three points, while Real Madrid will now turn their attention to the Club World Cup where they face Al Ahly in Rabat, on Tuesday. On the other hand, Mallorca will look to build on their La Liga momentum as they travel to play Sevilla four days later.
The win against Real Madrid meant the defending champions failed to close the expanding gap at the top of the standings with Barcelona now five points clear. It was also a testament to Mallorca’s ability to defend well and hit on the counter, which was predicted by Ancelotti before the game.
