Prior to the trip to the Santiago Bernabeu, Barca had only conceded one goal in eight top-flight league games this season, but two clinical strikes from Benzema and Valverde put them two goals down at the break.
Ferran Torres’ goal with seven minutes left presented Xavi Hernandez’s team a chance to level the score, but Rodrygo’s penalty in stoppage time gave the hosts back their two-goal cushion, ensuring that they finished with maximum points.
Los Blancos’ triumph put them three points ahead of their fiercest rivals at the top of the standings, and the result was Barca’s first league loss of the season.
Madrid are next on the road to Elche on Wednesday, and Barca hosts Villarreal the following day, as both teams are billed for La Liga fixtures during the midweek schedule.
