October 20, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid defeated Elche 3-0 in La Liga despite having three goals disallowed by VAR, extending their unbeaten streak this season to 15 games across all competitions.
Federico Valverde scored his sixth goal of the season from outside the penalty area to start the scoring and in the second half, Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio put the game away for Carlo Ancelotti’s charges.
Benzema’s goal came after he had three chances disallowed by VAR for offside. Elche’s chance to put pressure on the defending champions was wasted when defender Carlos Clerc’s glorious opportunity to head in an equaliser went begging.
Thanks to Andriy Lunin, there was no breaching of the visitors’ defense, with the 23-year-old backup keeper keeping everything at bay, while goals from Benzema and Asensio in the closing minutes made sure there would be no comeback.
Real have Sevilla at home coming up next in Saturday’s La Liga schedule. Elche will continue to seek their first victory of the season while being at the bottom of the standings when they travel to Espanyol on Sunday.
